This final report presents the results of the archaeological resolution works carried out on behalf of Kildare County Council and the National Roads Authority as part of the Archaeological Services Contract No. 5 ? Resolution, Kilcullen to Moone and Athy Link Road. The works were undertaken prior to the commencement of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Scheme: Phase 3, Kilcullen to Carlow. The Minister of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, following consultation with the National Museum of Ireland, issued Directions to Kildare County Council on 8 March 2007 for archaeological resolution works relating to the road development. The National Monument Section Registration Number, E2882, was allocated by the Department for the excavation of the present site in Baronsland townland, under the directorship of Emer Dennehy of Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd. An Environmental Impact Assessment was published in 2003 for the Kilcullen to Powerstown Scheme, with Valerie J Keeley Ltd preparing the Archaeological, Architectural and Cultural Heritage Assessment. This formed Chapter 10 of the EIS produced by the Roughan and O?Donovan ? Faber Maunsell Alliance. Geophysical prospection was carried out on certain areas of high archaeological potential by Bartlett?Clark Consultancy as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment, on behalf of Valerie J. Keeley Ltd/Kildare County Council. Aerial photography was undertaken along the entire route selection as part of the non?invasive assessment after the EIA stage. This work was carried out in April 2004 by Markus Casey. Archaeological testing carried out on the location of the present site by IAC Ltd under N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Scheme: Kilcullen to Powerstown. Archaeological Services Contract No. 1 ? Test Excavations, Kilcullen to Mullamast. On?site testing was carried out by IAC Ltd between 10 October and 19 November 2005, under Ministerial Direction Number A021/095 and six pits/postholes were identified, one of which contained a sherd of prehistoric pottery. The fills were recorded as charcoal stained silty clay and gravels. Full archaeological resolution was conducted on this site between 27 August 2007 and the 4 September 2007. Excavation works identified a small complex of six pits, two hearths and three stakeholes (Figure 3). The pits and stakeholes were primarily in?filled with charcoal enriched deposits and occasionally sealed with capping layers; 135 finds were retrieved. The finds were dominated by Early Neolithic thick?walled pottery sherds and struck flint and quartz. The most notable finds were four grinding and rubbing stones, the small size of which implies they were hand held. An additional thirteen small finds, mostly dominated by Early Neolithic lithics and two pottery sherds were recovered upon processing of the environmental samples. Four test trenches were excavated to the north, south, east and west of the site on 20 November 2007 to ensure no sub?surface archaeology was present in the immediate environs of the site. No additional archaeological evidence was identified at this time. A Preliminary Report of works on the site was completed by Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd in March 2009.
