Report from the project “Sharing Best Practices in how Civil Society Organisations use the Internet in Organising and Building for Socio-Economic Rights and Trust”.
Funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) and sponsored by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC).
The purpose of this project is to examine how and why the Repeal campaign won, in order to provide pointers to other progressive campaigns and groups – in particular how organisations can build trust and resolve conflicts in the age of social media.
Drawing on documentary analysis and 25 in-depth biographical narrative interviews carried out with abortion rights organisers in Ireland in 2019, the project investigated how they used digital media to organise and advance the campaign, develop alliances and networks, and deal with the inevitable internal conflicts that all social movements face. This report focuses on Digital Organising Tools because online organising is a new and vitally important arena for organising, about which both researchers and organisers have much to learn.
