The proposed N8 Rathcormac Fermoy By-Pass is approximately 17.5km in length and will extend from the northern end of the new N8 Glanmire-Watergrasshill Bypass in the townland of Meenane, passing to the west of Rathcormac and to the east of Fermoy and onto the northern tie- in point on the existing N8 Cork-Dublin Road at Moorepark West. A programme of addition archaeological investigation following the completion of the phase one assessment, was undertaken by Deirdre Murphy from July-August 2003. Eighteen trenches were excavated within this field and a number of potential archaeological features including a fulacht fiadh were identified. Archaeological resolution of Fermoy 4 commenced on the 23rd of October 2003 and was carried out by Tara O Neill under licence number 03E1639. Topsoil stripping on the 22nd of October 2003 revealed a number of potential archaeological features on this site. These included a fulacht spread, a stone lined hearth, a number of pits and an elaborate timber lined trough. Radiocarbon analysis revealed that this site dated to the Late Bronze Age.
