At the request of Meath County Council, Cultural Resource Development Services Ltd (CRDS) have undertaken a programme of archaeological excavations for the proposed N2 Finglas / Ashbourne Road Scheme, Cos. Dublin and Meath. This report refers to the excavation of Site 20, (previously designated Testing Area 20) within these works at chainage 13350-13490. This site was located in the townland of Harlockstown, in the barony and the Parish of Ratoath, Co. Meath. The site was excavated between the 9th Feb – 8th March 2004 under excavation licence 03E1310ext., an extension of the testing licence. Part of site 20 could not be excavated as it extended beyond the western limits of the development footprint, however, the full extent of the site exposed within the development footprint was archaeologically mitigated. The following report details the results of that excavation. A total of three phases of archaeological activity were associated with this site. Excavation revealed a fulacht fiadh, consisting of an irregularly shaped mound of burnt stone, which measured 9.70 x 19.30m in maximum extent within the road take and ranged from 0.03-0.23m in depth. Associated with this were four individual troughs, two of which were partially timber lined. Phase 2 was associated with the abandonment of the site and the development of a subsoil strata. Phase 3, the final phase on site, was marked by the construction of two modern field drains that extended into the mound material.
