This report presents the final results of an archaeological excavation at Site 1, Navan Inner Relief Road, Moathill, Co. Meath (refer Figs. 1 and 2). The site was fully excavated from April to June 2006 in advance of the construction of a new Inner Relief Road by Meath County Council and the National Roads Authority. The site was identified through a series of archaeological and geophysical assessments (Breen 1997a; 1997b; 1999; Nicholls & Shiel 2006; Murphy 2006) conducted in advance of the second phase of the road works, as the proposed new road passed very close to Navan Moat, an Anglo-Norman motte and Recorded Monument (RMP No. ME025- 023). . Three areas of archaeological interest were excavated along Phase IIB of the Navan Inner Relief Road in 2006 (refer Fig. 2). These were Site 1 (Excavated under Licence No. 06E 274) located in the southeast corner of a field to the northwest of Navan Moat and discussed in this report, and Sites 2 and 3 (Excavated under Licence No. 06E 024 ext.) located in a field to the west of Navan Motte, and discussed in a separate report by Stuart Halliday, Arch-Tech Ltd (Halliday 2007, and Halliday, in prep.). . All archaeological features within the road-take at Site 1 have been fully excavated and resolved. Post-excavation analysis of all finds and samples is also complete. A Preliminary Excavation Report on the results of the Site 1 excavation, dated 18th May 2007, has been submitted to Meath County Council, the National Monuments Section, Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and the National Museum of Ireland. A summary of the results of the excavation has been submitted to the Excavations Bulletin for the year 2006, and a short publication to be funded by the NRA is planned in the near future.
