Letter from Marie Martin to her mother Mary Martin (née Moore). Marie (1892-1975) was later the founder of the Medical Missionaries of Mary. At the outbreak of war in 1914 Marie joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment, a division of the Red Cross. She returned home briefly in 1916 before re-enlisting two months later and was posted to a field hospital in Heraldo, France.
Marie is writing this letter in response to a telegram her mother sent her recording the arrival of a notification from the War Office advising the family that Marie's brother, Charlie (1895-1915), was wounded at the front.
Marie immediately began to do what she could to discover any information about Charlie from her end, which she relates in detail to her mother. The news about Charlie sets of months of searching, by both Marie and her Mother, as to Charlie's whereabouts. She closes the letter by writing about spending Christmas in Malta.
