This thirty-minute long oral history interview was conducted by the Digital Repository of Ireland as part of The Atlantic Philanthropies archive project (2017-2020) titled Amplifying change: A history of the Atlantic Philanthropies on the island of Ireland in 2018.
Tonie Walsh explains how he founded Gay Community News [GCN], Ireland’s longest-running lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender publication in 1988. He also discusses his work for the National LGBT Federation [NXF], formerly known as the National Gay and Lesbian Federation [NGLF] and National Gay Federation [NGF]. Tonie elaborates on the difficulties faced by the gay community in the 1980s, gives a window into gay pop culture of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and discusses how the economic downturn and consequent austerity has affected gay activism since late 2000s.
