This site was located in the townland of Scratenagh, c. 7.25km northeast of Arklow town, Co. Wicklow. The archaeological excavation was carried out by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd. on behalf of Wicklow County Council and the National Roads Authority in advance of the construction of the N11 Rathnew to Arklow Road Improvement. The site was initially identified during archaeological testing carried out by IAC Ltd. under the same contract during August 2005 (Ministerial Direction No.: A022/002, Gill McLoughlin). The site was located in low lying pasture c. 25m west of the Redcross River. It consisted of a spread of black silty clay which contained frequent charcoal and heat fractured stone. It measured 11m by 4.25m with a depth of 0.26m. Subsequent excavation revealed that this site comprised burnt mound activity, although no associated trough was discovered. The remains of a paleo-channel possibly associated with the Redcross River were also identified and may have been the reason for the location of the site. The site was also located c. 25m to the north of Site A022/022, another burnt mound site. The total excavation area measured 25m by 40m (1000m²). The results of this excavation are not unexpected given the physical and archaeological landscape of the site. It also forms part of a complex of sites both typologically and chronologically. The low-lying marginal nature of the landscape is very favourable for burnt mound sites. The results of several excavations on this scheme and from excavations on the N11 Arklow By-pass to the south have produced burnt mounds dating to the Bronze Age period. In Scratenagh, six burnt mound sites were excavated (Sites A022/021–026). Five of these ranged in date from the late Neolithic to the middle Bronze Age. The sixth (Site A022/025) dated to the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age. It is felt that the main Bronze Age activity at the site is directly associated with other similar sites in Scratenagh, whereas the isolated Iron Age pit adds little to our understanding of the surrounding archaeological landscape. However, it does indicate that there was some small scale activity in the early Iron Age.
