Areas 2 & 3. This report brings together a series of geophysical assessments carried out in and around Woodstown Site 6, on the proposed N25 Waterford Bypass. The site is located in Woodstown (Baile na Coille) on the edge of the River Suir, 5 km southwest of Waterford City. All Figures can be found in Volume II, which accompanies this report. Test trenching (Russell 2003a) and an earlier geophysical survey (Bonsall & Gimson 2003b) at Woodstown Site 6 (between chainage 5920–6360) mapped the outer enclosure ditches of the settlement within the Compulsory Purchase Order boundary. The outer enclosure ditch appears to begin at chainage 6360 and exited the C.P.O. boundary at chainage 6280 (Russell 2003b). Earthsound Archaeological Geophysics were commissioned by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DOEHLG) to carry out a geophysical survey in an area to the south of the known site in order to assess the extent of the site beyond the C.P.O. boundary (Areas 4 & 5). Waterford City Council commissioned two geophysical surveys within the C.P.O. boundary. The survey in Area 1 was requested to determine the presence/absence of archaeology in an area to the SSW of the enclosure. The Area 6 survey was located around a probable Viking burial, in order to determine the presence/absence of other archaeological features. Areas 2 & 3 were surveyed and reported in 2003 (Bonsall & Gimson 2003b) to determine the extent of a number of archaeological features uncovered during test trenching (Russell 2003a). The results are reviewed here in the context of the new data gathered in the adjacent Areas 4 & 5. In total, six geophysical surveys are examined in this report. Permissions to undertake the survey were obtained from the DOEHLG, local landowners and Waterford City Council. • Areas 1 & 6 Licence Number 04R080 Dated 21/05/2004 • Areas 2 & 3 Licence Number 03R098 Dated 21/07/2003 • Areas 4 & 5 Licence Number 04R079 Dated 19/05/2004 Primary Archive held by Tramore House NRDO.
