Scanned drawing of stone axe (ISAP 02001) from Ballyportry South, Co. Cavan, from the National Museum of Ireland (NMI 1933:1261). Macro-ID - Shale. Micro-ID - Shale Ib. Petrology - Dark grey fine grained parallel sided shale. Description - Sides - Pointed. Junctions of sides with edge merge. Junction of sides with butt damaged. Edge - Sharp, no damage. Slightly C-shaped in profile. Small area in centre which has been reground/repolished. Blade Area - Higher level of polish than faces. face 2 blade area more extensive than face 1. face 1 more convex than face 2 in profile. faces - Both flattened along centre. Low level of polish centre of both faces, higher degree of polish adjacent to the side. Polish exfoliating centre of face 2 (depositional factors?). Three to four small remnant flake scars adjacent to both sides, both faces. face 1 two large shallow remnant flake scars adjacent to left side upper portion (ground only). Butt - Original. Partially ground. Damage in centre and right side. No distinct striae. Dimensions (length x width x thickness) - 18.2 cm, 6.9 cm, 2.4 cm, 480g.
