This report comprises the final results of the archaeological excavation of Site AR 28, in the townland of Rathcunikeen, Co. Tipperary. This excavation was undertaken as part of the archaeological programme for the M8N8 Cullahill to Cashel Road Improvement Scheme. The excavation was conducted by D.A. McCullough, under Ministerial Direction No. A027/000 Registration number E2372, for Valerie J Keeley Ltd, from 4th September to 11th October 2006. Excavation of this site uncovered the remains of a denuded burnt mound, made up of a cluster of approx. 30 shallow deposits of burnt mound material that may have originally formed a single mound. Six possible troughs and a number of associated pits were revealed below this denude mound, composed of three clusters of features (Group I – III). Charcoal from each Group produced radiocarbon dated within the Middle Bronze Age (1729-1534 cal BC [Group I]; 1505-11428 cal BC [Group II]; 1381-1212 cal BC [Group III]). Later post medieval agricultural activity also included a double ditched field boundary, cultivation furrecords and two very recent animal burials. Two artefacts were recovered; a Neolithic/Early Bronze Age chert flake recovered from topsoil and a silver coin, dated 1928 from the upper fill of a post medieval drainage ditch All archaeological work is now complete for this site and this report constitutes the final report on this excavation. A digital copy of the archive is available at the post excavation offices of Valerie J Keeley Ltd., Brehon House, Kilkenny Road, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. The original paper archive for this excavation will rest with the Road Design Offices of Kilkenny County Council. NOTE: THE GRID REFERENCES PROVIDED IN THE REPORT PLACE THE SITE IN THE TOWNLAND OF BALLYDAVID.
