This video presents a computer-generated 3D reconstruction of a Middle Bronze Age sweathouse discovered at Scartbarry 1 on the route of the M8 Rathcormac/Fermoy Bypass scheme, some 12 km south of Fermoy town. It was excavated by Tara O’Neill (Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd) in August 2003. The investigation revealed the remains of a substantial and (at the time) unique sweathouse, which was radiocarbon-dated to 1650–1190 BC. It consisted of a structure built over a 5-m-long stone-lined trough, with a large stone-built hearth attached to the eastern side of the trough. The hearth was partly surrounded by the remains of a windbreak shelter. The entire complex appeared to be surrounded by a shallow enclosing feature with a probable entrance towards its southern edge.
