Catherine Walshe was born in 1926, grew up in Macroom in County Cork and qualified as a civil engineer in 1949. She worked in this capacity for different engineering contractors until she married in 1953. Widowed in 1961, when she was four months pregnant with her fifth child, Catherine subsequently resumed employment, working in different civil engineering positions. She held the post of Assistant County Engineer in Cork County Council when she retired in 1982.
