This report, prepared on behalf of Donegal County Council, has been undertaken to describe the results of archaeological resolution carried out in advance of the proposed N15 Bundoran to Ballyshannon Bypass in the townland of Finner, Co. Donegal. Archaeological fieldwork was directed by Fintan Walsh of Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd. (IAC Ltd.), Licence no. 04E0014. Linear testing (Licence Ref. 03E1015) was carried out by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd along the route of the proposed scheme in Summer 2003. Finner 2 was identified as a cairn (possible clearance cairn) in the EIS (EIS Sites 7b and 7c) in Plot 84. b. This feature was deliberately not tested during the Stage 1 test excavation programme. Topsoil stripping of the area commenced on 13th January 2004 with a team of 1 field director and 1 assistant archaeologist. A 20m x 10m area was stripped of topsoil by a track machine equipped with a flat toothless bucket. After initial bulk stripping, the area of excavation was further investigated by hand in order to identify potential archaeological remains. Excavation revealed nothing of archaeological significance. It was clear during stripping that the limited amount of cairn material was simply a result of small-scale field clearance. The topsoil, which contained a small quantity of rounded clearance material, directly sealed natural bedrock. The bedrock was quite prominent at this location. No archaeological features or finds were uncovered during the excavation. As a result it was recommended that no further archaeological work would be required on site.
