This report comprises the final results of the archaeological excavation of Site AR40, in the Townland of Inchirourke, Co. Tipperary South Riding. Work was undertaken as part of the archaeological programme for the M8N8 Cullahill to Cashel Road Improvement Scheme. Excavation was conducted under Directive No. A027/000, Registration No. E2382, by Gary Conboy, for Valerie J Keeley Ltd, from 20th October 2006 to 6th November 2006. Excavation of this site revealed two burnt mounds (Sites A & B) with frequent amounts of heat affected stone and charcoal, located 25m apart, and an isolated pit located 50m to the north. Site A contained three troughs and a pit beneath the burnt mound. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal from one trough returned late Bronze Age dates of 760–410 BC and 814–596 BC, whilst a second trough produced Iron Age dates of 110 BC–70 AD and 100 BC–120 AD. The former trough also produced the only artefact from this excavation; a fragment of a quartzite saddle quern (E2382:1). The surface was microscopically analysed for phytolithes, a small sample of starch granules (species unknown) were identified. A small assemblage of unidentified animal bone was also recovered from Site A. Site B was undated. This also revealed a number of possible pit features beneath a disturbed mound. A medieval hearth pit containing burnt bone and charred cereal grains, radiocarbon dated to Cal AD 1058–1262, was also uncovered on the north eastern edge of the site. Later activity on site included post medieval and modern field drains, and some plough furrecords. All archaeological work is now complete for this site and this report constitutes the final report on this excavation. A digital copy of the archive is available at the post excavation offices of Valerie J Keeley Ltd, Brehon House, Kilkenny Road, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. The original paper archive for this excavation will rest with the Road Design offioes of Kilkenny County CounciI
