Title
Pressé series: Black and White.
Description
Acrylic on canvas. 152.6 x 183.2 cm, ‘Black and White’ is one of many
works from Irish artist Michael Farrell's Pressé Series which he
produced in the 1970’s. In these works, Farrell was inspired by
curvilinear motifs from early Irish art which he used to create
stylised, hard-edged abstract compositions. Farrell relocated to France
in 1971. He maintained a love-hate relationship with Ireland and the
escalating violence in Northern Ireland during the 1970s profoundly
influenced his work.
From the early 1970s Michael Farrell's work was significantly
influenced by events in Northern Ireland.
