Transcript of life history interview with 'Graham' from Cohort A (born 1916 - 1934) of the Life Histories and Social Change collection; Male, married and a grandfather. Graham was raised in a suburban area in the Mid-East and was surrounded by an extensive family network including grandparents and great-grandparents. He is descended from a long line of stonemasons and during the interview recalls that his grandfather spoke bearlagar na saor - the secret language of the stonemasons. Graham gives a fascinating account of being apprenticed; work ethic versus formal education is a strong theme throughout. Other topics discussed during the interview include political tensions arising from the Irish War of Independence and the early years of the Irish Free State, and food and traditions around family meals. All names have been anonymised. Access to the transcript is through application to the Irish Qualitative Data Archive and is restricted to bona fide researchers and teachers, and to students that are currently registered at a third-level academic institution. Audio clips from this interview are also available.
