Photograph of face 2 of stone axe (ISAP 01078) from Portglenone Area, Co. Antrim, from the National Museum of Ireland (NMI 1938:8386). Macro-ID - Schist Petrology - Grey brown strongly foliated coarse 70% biotite/muscovite schist. Description - Sides - Both rounded and well ground. Right side slightly broader than the left. Junctions of side with edge present. Rounded junctions of the sides with butt present. Edge - Worn and blunted, minor chipping over entire length. Straight in profile. Blade Area - Defined by being well ground, regular and with a low level of polish. Faces - Irregular on both faces, due to large areas of deep remnant pecking marks, only partially ground. However both faces are flattened, due to the layered nature of the rock. Butt - Original, damaged in centre, extending onto face 2, by a large irregular, post-manufacture, flake scar. No striae. Dimensions (length x width x thickness) - 23 cm, 10.4 cm, 4.4 cm, 1623g.
