Photograph of face 1 of stone adze/axe (ISAP 12866) from Tardree, Co. Antrim, from the Ulster Museum (UM WM 1810). Macro-ID - Porcellanite. Micro-ID - Porcellanite Ia. Petrology - Light grey, fine to coarse densely lineated streaked. Description - Sides - both pointed, junction of sides with edge and butt present. Edge - worn and chipped, still sharp, Face 1 small chips over entire length, Face 2 centre minor chip. Blade - Face 1 flat polished area, well defined both sides by junctions formed by remnant flake scars not fully ground out/ not polished, Face 2 more convex, number of small remnant flake scars towards edge and left side. Faces - Face 1 large number of remnant flake scars adjacent to both sides and towards butt, well ground down, but sparse polish, Face 2, polished over most of the surface, remnant flake scars adjacent to both sides, flake scars face 2 in general smaller than those on face 1. Butt - original, surface irregular but clearly made as an oblique butt. No damage. Striae visible on both faces , running straight back from edge on face 1, at steep oblique from left to right face 2. Remnant flake scars and partial polish give overall irregular appearance to the surface of the adze. Core taken from lower centre of face 1. Dimensions (length x width x thickness) - 14.9 cm, 6 cm, 3.7 cm, 463g.
