This is a final report of an archaeological excavation at Rathmullan 4 (01E0386) which was located on the route of the M1 Northern Motorway Gormanston – Monasterboice (Drogheda Bypass), Platin to Oldbridge, Chainage 21600–24800, Contract 7, County Meath. The excavation was carried out by Dermot Nelis of Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd on behalf of Meath County Council. The work was carried out under licence No. 01E0386 which was received from the DoEHLG in consultation with the National Museum of Ireland. The fieldwork took place between 10 April to 15 May 2001. A total area of 920m² was opened at Rathmullan 4 to reveal the archaeological features that were identified at the site during archaeological test trenching. A curvilinear ditch was uncovered which was cut by a large pit which contained both early Bronze Age and late Bronze Age pottery. A series of pits distributed across the site were undated however middle Neolithic lithics were uncovered from all feature groups and the topsoil. An early medieval date (AD 660–810) obtained from an upper fill of the Bronze Age pit is considered to derive from intrusive, later material A post-medieval/modern phase was also recorded which included an east–west drain and modern surface deposits. Post-medieval pottery, clay pipes and metal objects were recovered from the topsoil.
