Photograph of cross polarised thin section of stone adze (ISAP 03851) from Castlereban North, Co. Kildare, from the National Museum of Ireland (NMI P1949:058). Macro-ID - Schist. Micro-ID - Schist I. Petrology - Coarse gritty quartz mica chlorite green grey foliated schist. One of northern type. Description - Sides pointed irregular. No clear junctions with edge, but possible junction on left. No junctions with butt. Axe is very crude and appears to simply be an elongated stone which has been manufactured into an axe by creating a blade area. The only area of human working on the stone is a light grounding on one end of the stone to form a cutting edge. It is not clear whether this was meant to be the final finished form of the adze, but the morphological evidence may suggest that this is the case. Blade area defined. Face 1 of the adze is markedly convex, face 2 is flattened. Surface as described above. Core taken from face 2. B.G Dimensions (length x width x thickness) - 18.2 cm, 7.1 cm, 3.6 cm, 556g.
