Scanned drawing of stone axe (ISAP 03287) from Kiltarriff, Co. Down, from the National Museum of Ireland (NMI 1916:69). Macro-ID - Gabbro. Micro-ID - Gabbro II. Petrology - Coarse (7mm) 50 -50 feldspar -pyroxene intermediate intrusive.
Uralitised gabbro (IPC Group I?) Description - Sides broad rounded with slight flattening. Junctions with edge, none with butt. Edge quite sharp, with sinuous profile, some minor chipping - edge and blade have been reworked. Blade area defined by bevel, face 1, not as distinct on face 2. Distinct facet on the blade area, face 1. faces convex. Surface evenly ground and well polished - post polish pecking on sides particularly concentrated on left side, mid-way along length, gives notched appearance to side. Would appear to be haft related. Butt ground. Striae visible on blade area, both faces, coming straight back from edge. Core taken from face 1. Dimensions (length x width x thickness) - 9.7 cm, 6.6 cm, 3.5 cm, 357g.
