Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd (IAC), funded by the National Roads Authority (NRA) through Kilkenny County Council, undertook an excavation at the site of AR089, Rathclogh 1 along the proposed N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Scheme, Phase 4 – Knocktopher to Powerstown (Figure 1). The following report describes the results of archaeological excavation at that site. The area was fully excavated by Patricia Walsh under Ministerial Direction A032 and Excavation Registration Number E3726 issued by the DOEHLG in consultation with the National Museum of Ireland for IAC. The fieldwork took place between the 25 and 28 August 2007. This site was located at the edge of a flat pasture field with general views of the surrounding areas. An area 19.4m by 20.5m was stripped and two field drains and a possible field boundary were revealed. The excavation of the site at Rathclogh 1 identified a linear boundary ditch and linear drainage ditches. Pottery remains have indicated a post-medieval date for this activity. The boundary ditch runs parallel to and just inside the current field boundary. The identified remains at the site are associated with modern agriculture and are not of archaeological significance.
