This site was located in the townland of Cranagh, c. 9 km northeast of Arklow town, Co. Wicklow. The archaeological excavation was carried out by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd. on behalf of Wicklow County Council and the National Roads Authority in advance of the construction of the N11 Rathnew to Arklow Road Improvement. The site was initially identified during archaeological testing carried out in September 2009 by Fintan Walsh of IAC under the NMS Registration No. E4047. This phase of testing was undertaken to identify any previously unknown archaeology in specified areas previously unavailable during the main phase of testing undertaken during 2005 (Ministerial Direction A022-01 to A022-014). A burnt mound was identified at the northern end of test Area 7 and this survived as a spread/deposit of heat affected stone and charcoal rich clay with a number of associated pits positioned immediately to the north of the burnt mound foci. It was noted that the eastern extent of the burnt mound was exposed in the bank of the channelled stream which cut the eastern edge of the site. The results of the excavation have identified burnt mound activity dated to the late Neolithic / early Bronze Age. The analysis of the surrounding archaeological landscape shows activity dating primarily to the early and middle Bronze Age and most of this activity is in the form of burnt mounds which is to be expected given the low-lying nature of the natural topography. Some evidence of Neolithic activity was also excavated in the vicinity as part of the same scheme. At Ballynapark Site A022/035 to the north a large quantity of middle Neolithic lithics was recovered and further Neolithic activity was also identified to the south at Site A022/031 in Cranagh where sherds of an early Neolithic Carinated Bowl were recovered (Whitty 2009). This site is important on a local level and adds to the picture of continued occupation in this area during the prehistoric period.
