This report details the results of the archaeological excavation of site Newtown 3, in Newtown townland, County Westmeath (Ordnance Survey six-inch, Sheet 26, 344mm from the western margin and 467mm from the southern margin; National Grid Reference 244959, 250491; Figures 1 & 3). This report is one of five excavated sites (Marlinstown l, Boardstown 1 & Newtown 1?3) excavated along the proposed route of the N52 Mullingar By-pass (Stevens 2005a?d). The site was discovered during archaeological testing of the road scheme by Rob O'Hara (O'Hara 2004). Archaeological excavation was undertaken in May and June 2004 in advance of the proposed N52 Mullingar Bypass on behalf of Westmeath County Council, Council Buildings, Mullingar, under licence 04E0691 issued to Paul Stevens by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the National Museum of Ireland.
