This report comprises the final results of the archaeological excavation of AR043, in the townland of Kilkeasy, Co. Kilkenny. Work was undertaken as part of the archaeological programme for the Waterford to Knocktopher section of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Scheme. The excavation was conducted by Jonathan Monteith, under Ministerial Direction No. A032/000, Excavation Registration No.E3014, for Valerie J Keeley Ltd from September 5th 2006 until 5th December 2006. Excavation of an area measuring 1,050m2 revealed the remains of foundation features associated with a possible small house structure, orientated in an east ? west direction. This was defined by a shallow slot trench along the southern, eastern and northern walls, while post holes make up the western wall, enclosing an internal area of approximately 22.5m2. No definite evidence of an entrance was identified. A large pit with a post hole in the base formed the south east corner of the structure, while a second similar feature was located to the north, external to the structure. Evidence of an internal division was represented by a series of shallow internal features while an external hearth was recorded to the east of the eastern wall. At the northern extent of the site a series of shallow roasting and refuse pits were recorded containing charcoal, charred hazelnut shells and charred wheat grains. The ceramic assemblage consisted of 79 sherds of Early Neolithic Carinated Bowls from a minimum of 11 vessles, while a small lithic assemblage of 62 pieces, including a Group VI tuff axe, slate beads and leaf arrowhead portion, suggest an Early ? Middle Neolithic date. Radiocarbon determinations obtained using emmer wheat grains from the structure and the hearth date these features to 4860ñ35BP (3710 ? 3530 Cal BC) and 4820ñ40BP (3700 ? 3510 Cal BC) respectively. Dating evidence from the roasting pits produce a similar series of dates. A later Neolithic date of 4130ñ40BP (2880 ? 2580 Cal BC) from a large pit at the centre of the site may indicate a later phase of activity on the site. All archaeological work is now complete for this site and this report constitutes the final report on this excavation. A digital copy of the archive is available at the post excavation offices of Valerie J Keeley Ltd., Brehon House, Kilkenny Road, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. The original paper archive for this excavation will rest with the Road Design Offices of Kilkenny County Council.
