This report describes the results of an archaeological excavation undertaken in Cherryville townland, south-west of Kildare town, in County Kildare. The excavation was part of the archaeological programme preceding the construction of the Kildare Town By-Pass, financed by the National Roads Authority through Kildare County Council. In April 2001, when top-soil stripping and pipe-laying on the line of the Kildare Bypass was being archaeologically monitored by Breandan O’Riordan for Valerie J. Keele y Ltd under licence number 00E0467, two sites of potential archaeological interest were found at Chainage 5760 and 5795 (Figures 1–2). These are referred to as Cherryville 5 and Cherryville 6 respectively. They were excavated in July and August 2001, under licence number 01E0583. A small circular patch of burnt material was noted half way between the two sites. When the surrounding area was cleaned back, it proved to contain other features. For this reason, the area between the two sites was fully excavated as part of Site 5.
