Geophysical survey was undertaken within part of one pasture field situated in the townland of Johnstown, to the south-west of Dunsaughlin, in County Meath. The survey was commissioned by ACS Ltd on behalf of Meath County Council and forms part of the ongoing archaeological assessment being carried out in advance of the planned M3 Clonee - North of Kells motorway scheme. The scheme extends in a north-westerly direction from the end of the existing Clonee Bypass for a distance of c.60 kilometres in length before rejoining the N3 North of Kells. The geophysical survey was undertaken at the Johnstown 1 site, in Testing Area 15, on Contract 1 of the scheme. Testing and subsequent excavation commencing at Johnstown 1 in March 2004 and February 2006, revealed an area of settlement activity on the western side of the landtake. The remains uncovered during the archaeological works at Johnstown 1 comprised part of a large circular enclosure with numerous associated archaeological features suggesting the site was probably of late Iron Age to Medieval origin (ACS Ltd. 2004).
