A total of three ditches, one spread and one possible pit were exposed at Balgeen 4 ext East. Two of these ditches (F109 and F112) are likely to have been connected but have been cut by the sloped motorway batter (F103) and appear to have formed a foundation trench for a possible oval or circular structure. A large amount of animal bone was also recovered from the fill of both ditches. A large oval spread (F106) within the interior also contained animal bone and two pieces of flint, a possible core and a waste flake / possible scraper, and may represent an internal floor surface. This spread was deposited above a possible oval shaped pit (F113). A third linear ditch F111 was clearly later than the possible structure as it partially cut the ditch F109 to the southwest and may represent a later foundation trench or wall associated with the possible structure. A large amount of animal bone was recovered from the ditches. The species identified included cattle, horse, pig and sheep/ goat and has indicated butchering and breeding of sheep/ goat and pig. The wood I.D. identified two species, Prunus and Pomoideae, common to Irish hedgerows. A charcoal sample from the ditch F112 returned a radiocarbon date of Cal AD 890-1180 which suggest it may be associated with the site at Balgeen 5 which was dated to Cal AD 780-1010. A single possible pit was also exposed on the southern side of the motorway at Balgeen 4 ext West which is likely to be associated with the site excavated at Balgeen 4 in August last year by Helen Kehoe.
