Photograph of polarised thin section of stone axe (ISAP 02935) from Derry, Co. Derry, from the National Museum of Ireland (NMI 1897:290). Macro-ID - Porphyry. Micro-ID - Porphyry U. Petrology - Basic extrusive. Contains some (< 2%) anhedral feldspar phenocrysts. Description - Sides - Rounded. Sides splay out markedly from about 2 cm above the junctions with the edge. Junctions of sides with edge clear. Edge - Very sharp. Minor chipping in centre. Sinuous in profile. Blade Area - Moderate level of polish. Appears as if a small narrow portion, 4 mm wide, adjacent to the edge on Face 2 right side has been reground/repolished. Otherwise regular. Faces - Lower portion regular. A few small remnant flake scars adjacent to the sides. Moderate level of polish. Upper portion of axe pecked/flaked all-over (small flakes). Hafting! Appear as if pecking/flaking was primary and only lower portion was ever ground/polished. Butt - Complete no damage. Numerous striae running perpendicular to edge on both faces, approx. 13mm in length. Good example of hafting. Dimensions (length x width x thickness) - 11.9 cm, 6.1 cm, 3.1 cm, 226g.
