This final report presents the results of archaeological investigations carried out on behalf of Kildare County Council and the National Roads Authority as part of Archaeological Services Contract No. 4 ? Resolution, Prumplestown to Powerstown, prior to the commencement of construction on this section of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Scheme: Kilcullen to Powerstown. The work was undertaken under National Monuments Section Registration Number E2589 in the townland of Tinryland, Co. Carlow. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, following consultation with the National Museum of Ireland, directed that Linda Hegarty of Headland Archaeology Ltd should proceed with archaeological resolution. Archaeological testing carried out under Archaeological Services Contract, Test Excavations Contract 3; Prumplestown to Powerstown under Ministerial Direction Number A021/013 on this site in 2005 identified a concentration of pits and a linear feature. Full archaeological resolution was conducted on this site 27 April ? 1 June 2006. This revealed multiperiod activity at Tinryland with excavated features on site defined by a number of phases of activity based on stratified finds and radiocarbon dates returned. They can be summarized in the following manner; Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic, Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age, medieval, post?medieval and modern activity. In addition a number features that could not be ascribed to any particular phase of the sites use were recorded.
