This report, prepared on behalf of Westmeath County Council, has been undertaken to describe the results of an excavation carried out in advance of a proposed road development, on a 25m by 25m area - Site 3 - at Killickaweeny, Co. Kildare (OS sheet 4/5). The areas was fully excavated by Tim Coughlan under licence to Dúchas – the Heritage Service (Licence Ref. 02E0987) for Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd. The excavation took place between 24th July and 7th August 2002. A desk-based archaeological assessment was included in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of March 2001. This identified 24 sites of archaeological potential within the area of Contract 3 that would be directly impacted by the proposed development. An aerial photographic survey along the proposed motorway corridor was carried out in May 2001 to look for the presence of previously unidentified archaeological sites or areas of potential (Keeley 2001). The desktop assessment recommended that a programme of test trenching be undertaken in all areas of land take prior to the commencement of construction works. Linear testing (Licence Ref. 02E0141) for Contract 3 was carried out by Dermot Nelis of Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd and began on the 11th February 2002 and was completed on 10th April 2002. The linear testing programme involved the excavation of a trench approximately 0.30 m - 0.50 m deep (depending on the depth of archaeological deposits or natural geology) and 2m wide along the entire centreline of the proposed route. Offset trenches (1.8 m wide) were excavated off this centreline on either side of the road at intervals of 25m (staggered at 50 m intervals on each side) within the area of land take. Site 3 was revealed through linear testing W of Site 104, approximate chainage 32600, on 20th February 2002. Detailed inspection began on 21st March 2002 and lasted for two days. Linear testing revealed a small spread of charcoal resulting in an area approximately 10 m x 10 m being topsoil stripped to assess the extent of archaeological remains in this area. It was recommended in the stratigraphic report that the area of archaeological potential located at Site 3 be fully excavated in advance of construction works. The excavation of Site 3 (Licence 02E0987) took place between 24th July and 7th August 2002. The main archaeological feature on the site consisted of the remains of a small fulacht fiadh. The remains of the trough and an associated pit that may have served as the hearth were identified beneath the levelled burnt mound material. Two small postholes and a spread of clay with charcoal flecks were found to the NW of the fulacht deposits. These had no apparent archaeological significance apart from a flint scraper that was recovered during clearance in this vicinity. A number of linear features were also recorded on the site. These were associated with drainage, plough furrows and field boundaries and had no relationship with the fulacht material.
