This Final Excavation Report has been prepared by Rob O? Hara on behalf of Archer Heritage Planning Ltd/ Gahan and Long Ltd for Kerry County Council. This report outlines the final results of Stage (iii) Excavations Services and Stage (iv) Post-Excavation Services for the archaeological consultancy services contract for Ballynane 2, on the N86 Annascaul?Gortbreagoge Road Improvement Scheme, Co. Kerry. Excavations were undertaken in October 2011 by Rob O? Hara of Archer Heritage Planning Ltd under licence (11E346) from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht (DAHG) in consultation with the National Museum of Ireland (NMI). Stage (i) and (ii) excavation (O? Hara 2011) had previously identified an extensively disturbed fulacht fia in Ballynane townland (Ballynane 2) at ITM 461745, 603248 (158m OD). No new features were identified at the site. Charcoal (hazel) was recovered from environmental samples; however no archaeological artefacts were recorded. The site was radiocarbon dated to 2875 ñ 35 BP; 1193?969 cal BC (2-sigma) SUERC 38039 (GU26070) placing it in the middle to late Bronze Age period. NOTE: TO DATE WORK ON THE N86 ANNASCAUL TO GORTBEAGOGE ROAD IMPROVEMENTSCHEME HAS YET TO BE CARRIED OUT.
