This report details the results of archaeological excavations carried out at Rattin townland, along the line of the new N6 realignment between Kinnegad and Kilbeggan for Westmeath Co. Council. Situated beside the Old Togher road approximately 1 km off the N6, the site is one of fourteen identified during test excavations carried out in 2004. Following the identification of archaeological remains in situ during the testing phase, it was recommended that preservation by record would be required. Test excavations uncovered a number of large timbers in 2004; this area was extended and stripped of peat in January 2005. Excavations revealed a number of substantial pieces timber aligned on a similar orientation and forming a possible togher across a section of the reclaimed bog. There is also a possibility that the wood fell naturally as the peat in the area accumulated. Dendrochronological analysis of one piece of wood from the site indicated a date in the Middle Neolithic.
