These ten sites were originally identified during archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the N8 Glanmire – Watergrasshill Road Scheme. The sites were initially identified as a number of small distinct features of archaeological interest which were isolated from other sites. These sites were not considered, following consultation with the Project Archaeologist and the Licensing Section of Dúchas, to be worthy of individual licence applications. Licence 01E0501 was, therefore, awarded to cover all the townlands affected by the road scheme and was subsequently used to investigate ten sites in three separate townlands. Of these ten, two (AR26 and AR29) were found to be Iron Age features associated with iron- smelting activities, one (AR10) was a late Bronze Age cremation burial and two others were of possible archaeological interest (AR3 and AR12). The remaining five features were of no archaeological significance. The sites were excavated over a total of ten days in June and July, 2001.
