This report presents the final results of an archaeological excavation undertaken at Stokestown 2, Co. Wexford, on behalf of Wexford County Council. The works were undertaken as part of Stage (iii) of the Archaeological Services Contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N25 New Ross Bypass Road Scheme, which extends from Cappagh townland in Co. Kilkenny to Knockroe townland in Co. Wexford. The Minister of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, following consultation with the National Museum of Ireland, issued Directions to Wexford County Council on 30 November 2009 for archaeological works relating to the road development. The registration number, (E4524) was allocated by the National Monument Service for archaeological excavations at Stokestown 2 under the direction of Mandy Stephens of Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd. Following a constraint study and a route selection report, an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) was carried out on the preferred route, including chapters on the archaeological and architectural heritage (CRDS Ltd 2007a; 2007b). The EIS included recommendations for test?excavations along the entire route, survey of the townland boundaries and survey of a number of architectural/built heritage sites. Archaeological test trenching along the majority of route (including Wetland Test Excavation) was carried out by Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd (formerly Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd) on behalf of Wexford County Council between 30 November and 18 December 2009 under Excavation Registration Number E4067. A number of areas within the scheme were not accessible during the 2009 phase of test excavations in advance of a suspension of works related to the scheme. Outstanding test excavations were undertaken in advance of development works, between 22 October and 29 November 2013. In line with the recommendations set out in the EIA for the scheme and the Ministerial Directions, outstanding test excavation of 12 previously untested areas (Stage (i)) and pre?excavation assessments of two areas (Stage (ii)) were completed between 22 October and 29 November 2013. The 2013 testing programme was conducted under an amendment to the method statement for Excavation Registration Number E4067, approved by the Dept. of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, under the direction of Mandy Stephens, assisted by Patricia Long. The test excavations at Untested Area 4 (a former badger sett exclusion zone), identified an archaeological site (Stokestown 2) consisting of numerous pits, possible cremation burials and a possible ring?ditch. Stage (ii) stripping and cleaning of 1004 m² was carried out between the 7 and 13 November 2013 and this confirmed the presence of 37 archaeological features including three possible cremations, a potential ring?ditch and a series of pits. Full archaeological excavation (Stage iii) was undertaken at the site in November 2013. The site at Stokestown 2 revealed the remains of elongated pits and three Early Bronze Age cremation burials? two cists and one earth?cut pit. Two burials were associated with inverted ceramic vessels, one an unusual form of bipartite vase and the other an encrusted urn. Only the cremated remains associated with the encrusted urn could be determined as a possible male adult. The individual associated with the vase was concluded to be an adult of indeterminate sex and the third burial was of an individual of indeterminate age and sex. Radiocarbon dating was undertaken on a charcoal sample from the possible ring?ditch and on cremated human bone samples from the three cremation burials at Stokestown 2. The charcoal from the ringditch produced a Late Mesolithic date of 5714–5567 cal BC (SUERC 53864) which is most likely either an anomalous result or the result of residual Late Mesolithic charcoal. Though the possibility of Mesolithic activity at the site cannot be fully discounted. The three cremations all produced Early Bronze Age dates of 1951–1751 cal BC (SUERC 53819), 1956–1751 cal BC (SUERC 53820) and 1899–1695 cal BC (SUERC 53821) (Appendix 9). A series of 10 possible shale quarrying pits were also identified, mainly to the southeast of the site but with three located towards the north east. A charcoal?rich pit was also excavated to the northwest of the area. A further 6 pits were also excavated including a group of 4 to the east of the cemetery area. These pits produced little diagnostic material and remain undated. A final phase of activity on the site consisted of a series of agricultural furrows, orientated northwestsoutheast across the site and represent modern agricultural activity. Stage (iv) post?excavation work commenced in January 2014 and a post?excavation assessment report, including detailed proposals for post?excavation analysis and dating, was submitted before the end of January 2014.
