Transcription: [page 1] Pte G Soper Signallers;2/Roy Dub Fus France October 28th 1916 Dear Miss Roberts I am sorry I could not answer your letter before this but the way things are out here at present we do not get time to write. I am just after coming out of another fight which we were in for 3 days. I do not remember ever being in such a fight before we captured the German position But my God we had some fighting to do we used nothing else only bombs and bayonets. It was proper hand to hand fighting but thank God we came out alright. I never saw this country in such a state. The ground is absolutely [page 2] ploughed up you could not walk for more than 3 yards without falling into a shell hole and it is next door to impossible to get up there in the night time. We are up at present in one of the hottest spots in France. The guns are about 1 foot apart from each other. I never saw such a number of guns in all my life. Once you go up to this position you are finished with sleep. I did not get a sleep for 4 days. It is something horrible. The guns keep going night and day. It is surprising where they get the shells from they never cease firing. I often wonder where the gunners get their food from. I had a brother killed in the same fight. I went to look for him when things got a bit quiet but could not find him. I hope things are [page 3] alright at Home and hope you are having some good weather as the weather we are getting is simply rotten cold wet and plenty of frost. I can't say what way we are going on at present but we are doing spledid. Dear Miss Roberts I should like some warm underclothing also another shaving outfit as the last one you sent me I had it lost. I hope I am not putting you to too much trouble. I expect to be Home on leave in another month's time. I will close now trusting you won't be tired reading this letter. I Remain Yours Very Grateful Pte. G Soper [includes envelope]
