Valerie J Keeley Ltd was commissioned by Laois County Council and the National Roads Authority to undertake archaeological works along 18.1km (Contract 2) of the 35km long N7 Castletown to Nenagh (Derrinsallagh to Ballintotty) Road Improvement Scheme (EIS approved in November 2005). The scheme runs from the eastern junction of the present N7 Nenagh Bypass Co Tipperary and ties in with the M7/M8 Portlaoise-Castletown scheme to the south of Borris-in-Ossory in Co Laois. The DoEHLG Direction Number is A038. Contract 2 comprises the eastern half of the scheme and runs from Castleroan (Co Offaly), through parts of north Tipperary to Clonagooden (Co Laois). This report outlines the preliminary results of the archaeological excavation of one site excavated along the route. It was located in the townland of Camlin, Co Tipperary, 6 inch OS sheet TN17, NGR 213501,185426, chainage 23560-23650. The excavation was conducted by Colum Hardy under Direction No. A038, and excavation no. E3662, for Valerie J Keeley Ltd, from Thursday, 30th August to Friday 28th September 2007. Excavation of this site produced five burnt mounds each with a series of associated pits and troughs, two of which were wood lined. Radiocarbon dating and tree ring dating have placed the activity at Camlin 2 in the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age Periods, and provide evidence of archaeological activity spread over 1000 years.
