As well as features on, or references to KDW and its products, associated designers and events, these press clippings cover a very wide range of topics which change over time. Among these topics are the debate on design standards in Ireland, design education and the promotion of craft and design generally.
In keeping with KDW’s original aim of improving design to assist exports, there is also coverage of trade figures, export drives and the development of various industries in Ireland. Broad cultural and heritage issues are covered, including general visual arts reports and changes to the build environment. From the late 1970s there is increased coverage of fashion design, and in the 1980s, food. Throughout the period covered features on tourism in Ireland, particularly anything related to Kilkenny, are included. For a period of time there are frequent clippings on angling. Each year Christmas gift ideas are featured, as are ideas for Mother’s Day, Easter etc. The sources of the clippings are also wide ranging, including international, national and regional press and magazines and specialist trade publications.
The individual volumes have been arranged in rough chronological order. The clippings on individual pages may cover a range of dates within a month, or even over a number of months, which leads to a certain amount of overlap between volumes. Researchers are advised to consult volumes before and after the dates specified for a particular volume to ensure access to all possible clippings.
