Gradiometer scanning and targeted detailed gradiometer survey was undertaken on behalf of RPS Group Ltd and The National Roads Authority for Leitrim County Council in advance of the proposed bypass of Carrick-on-Shannon in counties Roscommon and Leitrim. 6.3km of the proposed road scheme was subject to gradiometer scanning of a 100m wide corridor, and a total of 9.6ha of targeted detailed gradiometer survey was undertaken to investigate the scanning results. Six areas of specific archaeological potential (Fig 2-5) were highlighted within the Cultural Heritage Route Selection (Coldrick, ACS 2002) as areas requiring further investigation by geophysical survey. These included a possible ringfort (ACS Area 1), Corryolus bog, (ACS Area 2) the southern bank of the River Shannon (ACS Area 3) and three separate clusters of sites (ACS Areas 4-6) including ringforts, enclosures and a possible megalithic site. The main objectives of the survey were to locate and identify the nature and extent of any archaeological remains within the proposed road scheme and in particular within the six areas of specific archaeological potential highlighted within the Cultural Heritage Route Selection (Coldrick, ACS 2002).
