The proposed N8 Rathcormac Fermoy By-Pass is approximately 17.5km in length and will extend from the northern end of the new N8 Glanmire-Watergrasshill Bypass in the townland of Meenane, passing to the west of Rathcormac and to the east of Fermoy and onto the northern tie-in point on the existing N8 Cork-Dublin Road at Moorepark West. A programme of advance archaeological investigation (phase one) was undertaken in May 2002, September 2002 and July 2003 under licences 02E0713-02E0720 issued by Duchas The Heritage Service to Donald Murphy and Deirdre Murphy. A total of forty-four sites was identified during this phase of works and they were subsequently resolved in 2003 during the second phase of the project (resolution phase). A significant number of features of archaeological potential was identified at Ballybrowney Lower 1 during phase 1, including numerous pits, possible hearths and postholes. Archaeological resolution of this site commenced on July 21st 2003 and was carried out by Eamonn Cotter under licence number 03E1058. Resolution of the site revealed a range of features including a Bronze Age settlement complex, a Late Iron Age/Early Medieval enclosure and an Early Medieval cereal- drying kiln. The Bronze Age settlement comprised three circular enclosures, of which one lay completely within the roadtake, and three unenclosed circular houses. Radiocarbon dates for these features ranged from 2580-780 Cal BC, with the bulk of the dates in the range 1700-800 Cal BC, the Middle Bronze Age. Pottery from the site was of the cordoned urn tradition, generally dated within the latter date range. To the north of the settlement a quantity of cremated material was found deposited in a small pit. The material was identified as cremated red deer antler. Charcoal among the antler was dated to the late Bronze Age. The southeast corner of a rectangular enclosure was also excavated. Charcoal from the fills of the ditch returned dates of AD 120-340 and AD 610-870. Fragments of iron slag were recovered from this ditch, indicating that smelting of iron took place in the vicinity. This activity may have been associated with the extant ringfort which stands c. 50m to the west of the motorway route.
