The proposed N8 Rathcormac Fermoy By-Pass is approximately 17.5km in length and will extend from the northern end of the new N8 Glanmire-Watergrasshill Bypass in the townland of Meenane, passing to the west of Rathcormac and to the east of Fermoy and onto the northern tie- in point on the existing N8 Cork-Dublin Road at Moorepark West. A programme of advance archaeological investigation (phase one) was undertaken in May 2002, September 2002 and July 2003 under licences 02E0713-02E0720 issued by Duchas The Heritage Service to Donald Murphy and Deirdre Murphy. A total of forty-four sites were identified during this phase of works and they were subsequently resolved in 2003 during the second phase of the project (resolution phase). Assessment of this site by Donald Murphy in 2002 had identified a number of potential archaeological features including a possible fulacht fiadh. Archaeological resolution of Scartbarry 1 commenced on the 25th of August 2003 under licence number 03E1438. Topsoil stripping was subsequently carried from the 21st–25h of August 2003 as part of the resolution phase of works and a number of potential archaeological features were exposed on this site. These included fulacht spreads, pits and linear features. The site dated to the Bronze Age and represented a number of fulacht spreads along with a structure containing an internal trough and associated stone lined hearth. One find was retrieved from this site during the course of the excavation; this was an in situ timber stake.
