This report details the final results of an archaeological excavation carried out at Tevrin 1, Co. Westmeath, in association with the construction of the N52 Cloghan to Billistown Phase 2 Turin to Billistown Realignment. The author of this report was commissioned by Fox Building and Engineering Ltd to carry out an archaeological excavation of an archaeological site identified during construction stage works for this road project. The archaeological work was carried out under the terms of Archaeological Licence 19E0549, and detection licence 19R0189, issued by the National Monuments Service. This excavation centred on a cist grave that included a single inhumation crouched burial and a single pottery funerary vessel. Analysis of the stone forming the cist identified it as comprising limestone blocks. Radiocarbon dating of a sample of bone from the inhumation burial returned a calibrated 2-sigma date range of 2138–1951 BC (UBA-42555). Osteological analysis of the skeletal assemblage identified that a skeleton of an adult male and two disarticulated human bones were present. Analysis of the pottery vessel identified it as a necked bipartite bowl. The site at Tevrin 1 is an example of early Bronze Age burial practice and is one of several similar sites known in County Westmeath. Some of these burial sites occur in isolation and others occur in groups. It is possible that other related sites remain in situ in the surrounding landscape and any further development projects in the vicinity of the excavation site at Tevrin should be subject to pre-construction archaeological assessment.
