William Barrett recalls the lack of military experience among the troops who landed at Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire). During a rifle inspection an officer stared down the barrel of gun before the sergeant major pushed him away. There was a dark sense of humour among the young troops.

Illustration of the planned 1916 memorial in Limerick, designed by Mr. Albert Power, R.H.A. Originally on the site of the monument was a memorial to Viscount John Fitzgibbon who died in the Crimean War; the I.R.A blew up this sculpture in 1930 and only the podium was left intact.
